Fitting Your Wreath to a PVC Door

You can hang your holly wreath to a PVC door, or to any other door without making an unwanted hole, using ribbon.

Image shows a Christmas wreath hung with ribbon attached with a bow to a door letterbox.
We will fit using this method for £5.00
We can also hang to doors without a letterbox.

Here are listed some other ways of hanging a door wreath, and some details about each method.

  1. Door knocker. All wreaths are made to include a length of string for carrying the wreath. The string is left untied, so it can be tied easily to a door knocker. You will lose the use of your door knocker using this method. This is, however, the easiest way to hang a door wreath.
  2. Drill a hole to add a hook, or screw in a small hook without using a drill. If you are going to have door hangings all year round, this is a good permanent option if you have a wood door. This option is not available for PVC doors.
  3. Stick on hooks. Hooks with adhesive backs. These are not strong enough to hold the weight of a real holly wreath. They may be suitable to hang lighter artificial wreaths, made of light materials and not too heavily decorated. They will just come unstuck if the object being hooked is too heavy. They may also leave a mark on some wooden doors.
  4. Over the door hooks. These come in a few different designs, some better than others. A good one that matches your type of door is worth having if you hang a wreath every year. You may need to research the type you need, or just take a risk when you buy.
  5. Using the ribbon method, but with other materials you have around, including;
    • String. Nylon string will work better than natural string, as the natural type will start to fray with constant opening and closing of the door.
    • Wool. a single strand of wool may not be strong enough to hold the weight of a real holly wreath, but may work for lighter artificial wreaths. You could plait the wool to make it stronger, but no thicker than will fir between the door and the door frame.
    • Tinsel. Some strong, good quality tinsel lengths may hold a wreath for a short period of time. You can use this festive method with more success if you carefully thread clear fishing line around the centre of the tinsel to strengthen it. This is a good way to trim the inside of your door.
You can add tinsel to any of the materials using this method afterwards, by winding it around the hanging material.

Christmas Wreaths - History & Origins

The term "Wreath", curiously enough, is linked to our word "Wrist", with both terms forming a continuous physical circular shape. It also came from Middle English's "Wreathe", meaning a twisted band or ring of leaves or flowers in a garland.

Wreaths have been used symbolically to centuries. The circle or ring shape is symbolic of eternity or eternal life, because the shape has no beginning or end. Back in ancient Rome, this symbol became so powerful that people used decorative wreaths as a sign of victory. Some believe that this is where the hanging of wreaths on doors came from.

Putting plants into the symbolic circular shape symbolises the strength of life overcoming the forces of Winter. Wreaths and other decorations during long Winters often consisted of whatever natural materials looked attractive at this bleak time of year. People used candles, firs, evergreens, hollies, berries and forced blossoms to hold on to the promise of Spring.

The ancient Druids are the first society in known history to have worn sprigs of holly and mistletoe. These priests of yesteryear believed that holly, with it's glossy, shiny, prickly leaves of green, adorned with red berries, remained green all year due to their magical properties. The Druids considered holly sacred. Many speculate the holly berries have given us our red and green colours of Christmas.

While there are many designs and styles of Christmas wreaths, they mainly fall into two categories;
the decorative Christmas wreath,
and the advent wreath.

The decorative Christmas wreath is made simply for crafts and holiday decorations, similar in use to Christmas lights. These have a different purpose to other types of wreath. Wreaths give a house or office the "finishing touch" to the holiday decorations. Their symbolism and look just give the area a little extra Christmas feeling. Decorative Christmas wreaths are usually made of everygreen leaves, holly, or other materials, which symbolise life throughout tough Winters.

The Advent wreath is a tradition that is a part of folklore from centuries ago. The pre-Christian Germanic people during the cold December darkness of Eastern Europe, gathered wreaths and lighted fires as signs of hope in the coming Spring and renewed light. The 16th century Catholics and Protestants used wreaths as symbols to celebrate their hope in Christ, the everlasting light. From Germany, the use of the Advent wreath spread to other parts of the world.

Traditionally, the Advent wreath is made of four violet or rose candles in a circle of evergreen, with a fifth candle in the middle. Each day at home, the candles are lighted before the evening meal, one candle for the first week, and then another each succeeding week until December 25th. The last candle is the middle candle of the wreath. The lighting of this candle takes place on Christmas Eve and represents the birth of Jesus Christ.

Christmas Wreaths

This is a wreath made on an artificial spruce ring.
All decorations can be added to real holly wreaths. Add a few of the same decorations, or choose mixed decorations, with or without a colour theme. Keep the design simple or heavily decorate it.
Wreaths can be hung on your door with string, or with ribbon to match your wreath or your door.
I will add many different ideas on this blog in the lead up to Christmas.

Picture shows a wreath with natural decorations of wide hemp ribbon bow, natural string bows, and natural pine cones.

Making Holly Wreaths

It takes a long time to make a traditional holly wreath from scratch. Not to mention that the holly bites back.
Here are the steps, if you want to make your own.

Step one:
Using either string or binding wire, pack a wire ring with moss.
Method; secure string or binding wire to the ring, add a fistful of moss between the outer and inner ring, wrap the string or wire around the ring and the moss tightly to hold it in place. Repeat until the ring has an even amount of moss all the way around.

 Mossing Christmas Wreaths

 Binding moss to wreath

Step two:
Add the green background to your wreath. This can be just holly, cupressus, fern, conifer or any type of greenery you like. Avoid using greenery that wilts or shed if you want your wreath to stay green until the end of Christmas.
Method: There are various ways of fixing the greenery to the wreath base. Here are a few,
   - Add the stems of greenery one at a time, securing each piece with string or binding wire, hiding the string or wire with the next piece. Work around the ring.
   - Cut wire pieces 7-10 cm, bend in half. Add greenery stems one at a time, securing each with the wire, either around the ring, or through the ring (like a staple). Work around the ring, hiding the last wire with the next piece of greenery.
   - Wire bunches of greenery together and bind with wire. You can bunch together the same or mixed greenery to add to your wreath. As you are not building up directly onto the ring, you can work around the wreath, or work from the outer edges into the middle (see pics).

 Traditional Festive Wreath Making

Step 3:
Decorate your wreath. You can add almost anything to your wreath. You can stay traditional and add cones, ribbons, cinnamon sticks, dried fruit, berries etc. Using real berries that are already on the holly should be done with caution as they may fall from the holly, especially is you are hanging the wreath on your front door. Squished berries can be slippy. You can add other Christmassy decorations, such as tinsel, baubles, snowflakes, or anything else that is small that may be hanging from your Christmas tree. You can match your door wreath to your house decor, door colour, curtains etc. You can add things that are individual to you, photos (laminate them if they will get wet), football badges and ribbons, trophies, small animals, teddies and other stuffed toys, or anything else at all.
You can also just leave your wreath plain, if that's what you like. It can be as bare or as busy as you like, in a symmetrical design or a lovely festive mess.
Method; attach wires securely to your decorations. Push the wire through the moss where you want to place the decoration, and pull through at the back until your decoration is in place. Then, either push the wire back into the moss from the back until the wire is flat (you may need to trim the wire first), or push the wire through your greenery and wrap it tight around the ring.
Some decorations, such as tinsel, ribbons and bows can be tied directly onto the wreath, around the ring or around the greenery. This is a less precise way of adding decorations, but works fine with busy non symmetrical designs

Step 4:
Back your wreath. Adding a plastic, cellophane, or polythene backing to the back of your wreath is optional. I back all the wreaths I sell as I do not know the customer's intention for the wreath when purchased. Skipping this step will not affect the look of your wreath, and it will not affect the life of your wreath very much. It may help the damp moss to retain some moisture. The main purpose of the backing is to protect the surface of your door, and to avoid any moss shed from building up on your doorstep. If you are happy to clear up any mess caused by a natural wreath, or if your wreath is to be displayed somewhere such as a gate post or at a cemetery, you can skip this step. I would recommend this step is you have a wooden or painted door.
Method; you will apply strips of cellophane or polythene to the ring using staples. You can buy ready made backing strips and long staples or mossing pins, or you can easily make your own. Simple cut 5 cm lengths or wire, and bend to make the pins. The backing can be made from sandwich bags, carrier bags, or cellophane from cut flowers.
Pin the backing around the outside of the ring first, then the inside. As the inside is smaller, some folding and overlapping will be necessary to keep the lining flat. Overlap the end over the beginning by about 3 cm. Trim the length. Trim any excess from the inner ring.
