With a history that dates back to 15th century B.C., chrysanthemum mythology is filled with a multitude of stories and symbolism. Named from the Greek prefix "chrys-" meaning golden (its original colour) and "-anthemion," meaning flower, years of artful cultivation have produced a full range of colours, from white to purple to red. Daisy-like with a typically yellow centre and a decorative pompom, chrysanthemums symbolise optimism and joy. They're the November birth flower, the 13th wedding anniversary flower and the official flower of the city of Chicago. In Japan, there's even a "Festival of Happiness" to celebrate this flower each year.
A symbol of the sun, the Japanese consider the orderly unfolding of the chrysanthemum's petals to represent perfection, and Confucius once suggested they be used as an object of meditation. It's said that a single petal of this celebrated flower placed at the bottom of a wine glass will encourage a long and healthy life.

A Gift for MUM

Silk flower MUM covered in Mums

Width: 25cm Height: 12cm Depth: 7.5cm

MUM lettering cut from a single dry oasis block. Lettering covered in 3cm orange daisy chrysanthemums, with hand made ribbon butterfly, made from 0.5cm blue floral ribbon.
The back and sides of the block are covered with woven, green, 5cm floral ribbon and held with straight pins.

This item is completely hand made, apart from the oasis block, which dictates the size of the MUM. It will accommodate a number of different flower types, the flower diameter needs to be between 2cm and 3cm due to the size of the lettering that fits in the block. If I have the materials in the colours you want, to make the flowers you want, I will make you one of these completely unique to order.

A lovely display ornament for a windowsill, mantelpiece, or sideboard. The item is not heavy, and therefore would not work as a bookend or doorstop.

As the item is not heavy, if you are considering this as a graveside gift in memory to your Mum, it will not stay put if you sit it on the ground. You could try pinning it with wires through the ribbon weave, and across the top, between the letters and down the sides (I can give you some wires if you ask, and attach the wires to the arrangement). Or dig a rectangle hole about 4cm-5cm deep and sit it inside, or pile up some pebbles around the base. Please note, none of these methods have been tested.

or yellow. The foliage often deteriorates more quickly than the flowers themselves. Recutting the stems often will also increase the uptake of water and increase vase life. Most chrysanthemums will last 7 to 12 days on average.
